Today on what would be John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 44th wedding anniversary, Yoko Ono entered the gun control debate by tweeting out a picture of John Lennon’s blood stained glasses with text layered over reading: “Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980.” Lennon was, of course shot, in front of his New York City apartment by crazed fan Mark David Chapman.

Although Ono’s numbers are correct, she is including suicides and accidental deaths with her figures. In 2011 for example, only 25 percent of gun deaths were homicide. And according to Pulitzer Prize winning website PolitiFact, “Using total firearm-related deaths makes the case against guns more dramatic than just using homicides alone.”
