A man is facing charges following a domestic dispute earlier this month which resulted in his ex-girlfriend shooting him in the chest inside her Mounds View, Minnesota, home.
The victim told authorities that Daniel Carlson had previously rented a room in her basement, but the two developed a romantic relationship while he was staying there. However, she attempted to end the relationship with Carlson earlier this month, asked him to move out of her home and took his house key.
According to a report by the Star Tribune, Carlson was upset over the failed relationship and had made previous threats to kill the woman, whose name has been withheld. On Jan. 18, just before midnight, Carlson showed up at the woman’s house and began banging on the door. She told him to leave, but he continued to knock at the door.
Fearing for her safety, she retrieved a handgun and through the door repeatedly told Carlson to leave. But he ignored her requests and she soon saw the lock on the door turning, the Pioneer Press reported.
Carlson then made his way inside, forced himself on top of her and hitting her in the head several times. At that point, the woman put the gun to Carlson’s chest, but he did not stop attacking her, so she shot him. Even after being shot, Carlson continued fighting the woman, according to her complaint.
The woman said during the assault Carlson had a “wild-eyed” look about him as he asked, “How could you do this to me? I just wanted some answers!”
Carlson’s attention eventually turned to the woman’s weapon and a struggle ensued over the gun, during which time she was able to remove the magazine from the handgun before Carlson gained control of it.
Once he had the gun, Carlson then went to the refrigerator and grabbed a beer, and the woman ran outside while he was distracted. However, Carlson followed her, but collapsed on the driveway. The woman was then able to run back inside the house and call 911.
While still inside, the woman told authorities she saw Carlson put the gun to his own head and pull the trigger, but it didn’t fire because the gun was not loaded.
When authorities arrived, Carlson was still outside, with the gun and a half-empty beer beside him. Carlson apparently told the officers, “Don’t blame her, I was just trying to get answers.”
Carlson was transported to the hospital, where his injuries were deemed non-life threatening. He now faces charges for terroristic threats and domestic assault.
No charges are expected to be filed against the woman, who appeared to have acted in self-defense.
