A 25-year-old woman was fatally shot by police officers outside of the Underground Atlanta police precinct Thursday afternoon after she opened fire on the officers from the inside of a patrol car.
The incident started around 5 p.m. when Alexia Christian was detained on suspicion of car theft. Details are still a bit vague, but Christian was placed in the back seat of a patrol car. At some point, Christian began shooting at two officers. The officers fired back, striking Christian. Witnesses said they heard more than half a dozen shots.
Officers performed CPR on Christian before paramedics arrived, but she later died at the hospital. No one else was injured.
The investigation is ongoing, but witnesses said Christian was initially handcuffed and somehow managed to free one hand. It’s unknown if she was searched before she was detained, but officers recovered a Taurus PT 138 .380-caliber handgun used by Christian.
