For the third night in a row, violent riots erupted in Charlotte, a response to the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old man Tuesday afternoon. But a newly released photo, taken from anonymous witness at the scene, shows – despite some claims – that Scott was likely armed with a gun, which can be seen in the photo lying beside his body moments after the shooting.
The officer says he fired after Keith Lamont Scott exited his vehicle with a gun in his hand and repeatedly refused to comply with commands, one of which was to drop the gun.
However, Scott’s family – who arrived on the scene after the shooting – as well as some individuals claiming to have witnessed the encounter, say Scott was murdered in cold blood. They say Scott was not armed and was instead simply sitting in his vehicle holding a book – not a gun – while waiting for his son to come home from school.
Scott’s daughter, who live-streamed the scene after the shooting via Facebook, said her “daddy was shot four times for being black,” failing to acknowledge the fact that the officer who shot Scott is also black. She also claims her father did not have a gun.
But Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney indicated these claims were false.
“It’s time to change the narrative,” Putney said, “because I can tell you from the facts that the story’s a little bit different as to how it’s been portrayed so far, especially through social media.”
While clearly there are details yet to be made public, the photo does show what appears to be a gun on the ground next to Scott.
