Wilson Scattergun Technologies Standard Model Shotgun Perfect For Home Defense
Article By Rob Haught
Berryville, AR – -(AmmoLand.com)-Whenever the subject of home defense comes up in conversation between shooting Enthusiasts, the choice of weapons is always a hot topic.
Having access to just about anything, friends ask me what my choice is. I like to say I have a balanced approach and use several shotguns! All joking aside, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better tool than a properly set up 12ga shotgun.
As a long established provider of tactical shotguns, Scattergun Technologies offers a complete line of properly set up pump action shotguns based on the Remington 870 platform. For many years Scattergun Technologies shotguns have been in service in Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement agencies as well as the private sector.
From this service came feedback on what modifications were most useful in the setting up of a serious social shotgun. Over the years the models have been thinned out as we learned just what worked well and what didn’t.
The company’s flagship is the Standard Model Shotgun. This workhorse is ideally suited for just about any task a fighting shotgun could be called to perform. It makes an ideal duty gun as well as a great home defense model.
In considering the use of the shotgun for home defense it is smart to take time to think just what it needs to do. When you think of home defense the scenario that immediately comes to mind is a home invasion or nighttime burglary. Therefore, the most likely encounter will be indoors and more often than not in the dark or at least, by definition, reduced light conditions. You may also have other family members in the residence who are in other bedrooms and likely unaware of the problem. You may wake from a deep sleep in the dead of night to a noise and realize there is somebody in the house who shouldn’t be and respond in less than your normal uber tactical range attire.
This tells me that my response weapon needs to be equipped with a white light of some kind to allow for identification of the threat. You would hate to tragically mistake your teenager sneaking back home late for a burglar. I would also suggest an ammo choice that was unlikely to penetrate the walls of my home and injure or kill a family member in another room. The 12ga allows for a wide selection of shot size to do just this.
Without starting a firestorm of controversy.
I would suggest that a load of #4 shot in a high base shell would do pretty well at room distance without penetrating too much drywall and paneling. I would also like the capability to carry extra ammunition on the gun itself, as my sleeping attire doesn’t have pockets. A sighting system that allowed for rapid sight picture and a night sight insert would also be ideal for low light shooting situations.
The Scattergun Technologies Standard Model fits all these criteria. Equipped with a Surefire fore end, it has outstanding light ability to identify the threat. Trac Lok Ghost ring sights allow for fast sighting in low light. With a magazine tube extension and sidesaddle, the Standard Model carries enough rounds to take care of business. This means when things go bad and you jump out in your skivvies, you won’t have to worry about bringing spare ammo or a flashlight.
The shotgun is the most powerful small arm in our arsenal and provides a serious tool for home defense when set up like the Standard Model. I’ve often said, if I could only have one firearm it would be a 12 ga. pump shotgun. If I had a choice what kind that would be, I would pick a Scattergun Technologies shotgun hands down. The Standard Model has become just that. I think it’s the Gold Standard in tactical shotguns.
