The widow of Matthew Gerald, a Baton Rouge police officer who was killed in the line of duty last year, gave birth to a baby boy Tuesday afternoon.
Gerald was one of six Baton Rouge-area law enforcement officers shot in an ambush in July 2016. Gerald died from his injuries, and it wasn’t until after his death that his wife, Dechia, found out she was pregnant. Doctors estimated that she conceived less than a week prior to her husband’s death.
Little Falyn Matthew Gerald entered the world at 4:31 p.m. Tuesday and he has been dubbed “Baby Buttons” by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
“It was very overwhelming… very emotional,” Dechia said of her son’s birth. “Every emotion you could imagine comes at one time, all at once, but it’s very exciting.”
