Gun grabbers have identified a new target for their war on guns: senior citizens. Since pushing gun control has become too difficult the old fashioned way (through Congress), the Obama administration is working tirelessly behind closed doors to ensure that this violent demographic is deprived of their Second Amendment rights.
The administration is pushing to ban Social Security beneficiaries from owning guns if they lack mental capacity to manage their own financial affairs. This action would impact around 4.2 million people, many of whom have nothing wrong with them other than forgetfulness.
As one can imagine, gun rights advocates aren’t the only ones fuming over this absurd gun control push. Leading mental health experts and advocates for the disabled are fiercely opposed to it as well.
“Someone can be incapable of managing their funds but not be dangerous, violent or unsafe,” said Dr. Marc Rosen, a Yale psychiatrist told the Los Angeles Times. “They are very different determinations.”
Likewise, Ari Ne’eman of the National Council on Disability, told the LAT that they would oppose any policy that used assignment of a representative payee as a basis to take any fundamental right from people with disabilities, saying the qualification process uses “an extraordinarily broad brush.”
Beyond the unconstitutionality of this potential move, it’s sad to think that some of America’s most defenseless citizens could be deprived of this critical right, just because they can’t balance their own checkbook. A gun is the only thing that can truly level the playing field between a senior citizen and a young attacker. Guns give many seniors peace of mind, especially when they’re living alone. What other resource do they have? A cane?
It doesn’t make sense that this administration is singling out senior citizens. When was the last time anyone heard of a senior citizen behind the gun of any mass shooting (or any homicide, for that matter)? Rather, it seems to me like President Obama is getting desperate to fulfill his promise after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy to make gun control an issue in his second term.
President Obama is playing politics plain and simple.
Approximately 56 percent of senior voters turned out for Romney in 2012, and an even stronger majority will probably vote Republican again in 2016. Targeting older citizens is an easy way for the Obama administration to build up its gun control credentials without throwing Hillary’s voter base under the bus.
But at what cost? Our nation’s seniors will soon find out if this heinous government overreach proceeds. The only way back that I see will be a change in the White House. In the meantime, they might want to start hiding their pistols.
