In the largest demonstration the country has ever seen – surpassing even the day Allies took control from the Nazi Party during World War II – an estimated 3.7 million people across France took to the streets Sunday to show support for the victims in the recent terrorist attacks, to stand up for the right to free speech and to collectively say, “We are Charlie.”
Somewhere between 1.2 and 1.6 million of those people marched in the country’s capital, with multiple demonstrations spanning across all of France, and other rallies in major cities across the world.
“Today, Paris is the capital of the world,” said French President Francois Hollande. “Our entire country will rise up toward something better.”
Prime Minister Manuel Valls declared all-out war.
“It is a war against terrorism, against jihadism, against radical Islam, against everything that is aimed at breaking fraternity, freedom, solidarity,” Valls said during a speech in Évry.
Altogether, 17 people were killed in the three-day terrorist spree, which started at the Paris office of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical publication which came under fire after publishing cartoons depicting Muhammad.
