Yesterday Mayors’ Against Illegal Guns co-chair and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and National Rifle Association Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre appeared on Meet the Press. The two, who are the figure heads for opposite sides of America’s gun debate, appeared in separately taped segments.
In the interview with Bloomberg, which aired first on the show, he made the announcement that he will be funding a new $12 million television ad campaign across the country in efforts to push specific senators to back gun control. Bloomberg also said that although there was a setback last week in Congress, supporters of an assault weapons ban are “going to win.”
LaPierre responded to Bloomberg’s Meet the Press segment by calling him “insane” and “reckless,” and added that Bloomberg can’t buy America with his endless fortune.
“He can’t spend enough of his $27 billion to try to impose his will on the American public,” the NRA head said. “They don’t want him in their restaurants. They don’t want him in their homes. They don’t want him telling them what food to eat. They sure don’t want him telling what self-defense firearms to own.”
LaPierre continued to express how the NRA was right in suggesting a comprehensive school safety plan back in December — a plan which was widely heralded as out of touch by many in the press.
“Ninety percent of school administrators, 90 percent say that armed security, police officers in schools, make those schools safer. Not a mom or dad wants to drop their kid off at school and leave their kids unprotected.”
“Yes, we were right, and we’re right that the mental health system needs to be fixed,” he said of the NRA. “We want to do the real things that make people safe. What’s appalled me about this whole debate is about how little it has to do with making people safe.”
