A 61-year-old veteran who served in the Vietnam War, beat cancer, then went on to serve again in Iraq was killed last week in Tacoma when a street racing teen lost control and struck the veteran, who was riding a motorcycle at the time.
“It makes everyone so angry,” said Bill Saxton, the victim’s friend, “it was a senseless stupid accident.”
Saxton noted that if anyone ever needed help, Rollin Gray was there.
Gray was riding on his Harley-Davidson Tuesday when the accident occurred. According to witnesses, the two teens – ages 16 and 18 – met at a gas station and exchanged words before deciding to race. While driving at excessive speeds, the 18-year-old cut off the 16-year-old, who only had a learner’s permit and was not legally allowed to even drive on his own. The 16-year-old lost control of his car and crashed into Gray before running off the road. The 18-year-old left the scene, but was later found by authorities.
Gray, who has a 15-year-old son, suffered severe leg, back and head injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. He fought for his life for two days before he passed away.
“They have taken a man’s life who did nothing but give to this country, give to his community, raise a family,” Saxton said of the teens, who were cited and released but have not been charged at this time.
