The previously removed SpongeBob SquarePants monument that once marked the Ohio grave of a soldier who was murdered by her soldier boyfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013 was reinstalled Friday.
Army Sgt. Kimberly Walker, 28, loved SpongeBob. Her family wanted to commemorate her death by placing a custom made SpongeBob headstone above her grave in the Spring Grove cemetery in Cincinnati. After spending $26,000 and having the headstone installed, the cemetery demanded it be removed. But the Walker family fought to have it reinstalled, and a year later, they won, Daily Mail reports.

“They stand 6-feet tall and he’s 4-feet wide and he’s on a platform of 8 inches, so it makes him 6-feet-8-inches tall,” Walker’s mother, Deborah, told WLWT.
Though those in charge of overseeing the cemetery had originally approved the design, they later changed their minds and ordered it be removed.
“Although the family chose a design with the guidance of a Spring Grove employee, unfortunately the monument did not fit within Spring Grove Cemetery guidelines,” said cemetery President and CEO Gary Freytag.
Freytag promised to work with the family on a new design, but the Walkers were adamant about keeping SpongeBob in the cemetery. Finally, nearly a year later, the SpongeBob headstones were replaced in their original spots.
