The Transportation Security Administration confiscated an 80-year-old woman’s walking cane at the Myrtle Beach International Airport Thursday after discovering the cane actually concealed a sword. However, authorities believe the elderly woman was likely just as surprised by the discovery as they were.
Transportation Security Administration regional spokesman Mark Howell said such occurrences aren’t actually all that uncommon. Howell said canes are oftentimes purchased secondhand at thrift stores with the buyer unaware that it’s anything other than a common cane.
Nonetheless, Howell took the opportunity to once again go over the list of prohibited items for carry-ons, which still encompasses anything that looks like a weapon, including toy guns and those little squishy stress balls in the shape of hand grenades.
