In his first visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as Commander in Chief, President Trump awarded a Purple Heart to Sgt. 1st Class Alvaro Barrientos on Saturday.
Barrientos’s right leg was amputated below the knee after he was wounded in Afghanistan just last month. Barrientos was accompanied by his wife, Tammi, during the brief ceremony.
“When I heard about this I wanted to do it myself,” Trump told Barrientos. “Congratulations on behalf of Melania and myself and the entire nation. Tremendous.”
According to reports, the president met with about a dozen other service members while visiting the hospital.
