From the moment Rust Cohle grabs the hostage until the scene comes to a close, the camera never cuts away.
“True Detective” is a new HBO series starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey that follows a pair of detectives through their 17-year-hunt for a serial killer. To bring the fourth episode, “Who Goes There,” to a close, Cary Fukunaga uses a six-minute, uncut scene, MTV reports.
Fukunaga knew he wanted to use a oner, or long take, on the heist scene, as it provided the audience with a close-in, visceral connection to the action.
“The best ones, you don’t even realize that they’re oners,” Fukunaga said. “They’re the most first-person experience you can get in a film.”
“True Detective” runs Sundays at 7 p.m PST.
