CHECK OUT FN PISTOLS ON GUNS.COM
Perfect for new shooters who need that early confidence boost while they learn fundamentals or for seasoned experts who just want faster shots on target, red dots offer a simpler means to land shots where you want them. A recognizable name in the world of optics, Trijicon is known for producing quality red dots, including one of the most popular models — the RMR. Here at Guns.com, we’ve been itching to test out the second generation of RMR optics, the RM06 Type 2, with a new optics ready FN pistol and Trijicon was happy to oblige us.
The Basics
The RM06 Type 2 continues Trijicon’s tradition of quality lenses while also adding some features that are useful and handy to pistol shooters. Measuring 45mm in overall length, the aluminum forged RM06 Type 2 offers a weight of 1.2-ounces with the CR2032 battery installed.
Waterproof up to a distance of 20-meters, the RM06 Type 2 offers four models in total – an adjustable LED, dual-illuminated, LED and RMR HRS. Trijicon hooked Guns.com up with adjustable LED for this review. Decked out with a bevy of features, the RM06 Typer 2 offers illumination adjustment buttons along with manual and auto modes to make the shooting life a little easier.
Unlike previous generations, the latest generation of RMR offers tougher wind and elevation dials that aren’t as easy to accidentally engage – a plus for those that tend to use and abuse their optic. The Type 2 sports a 1x magnification and red reticle that transitions from day to night use via those handy illumination adjustments. The 3.25 MOA dot can be turned up for low light and subsequently toned down for daytime shooting.
On the Range
Trijicon sent me the RMR Type 2 to test out alongside FN’s newest 509, the FN-509 MRD. Due to the optics ready nature of the FN pistol, installation was easy and took just a matter of minutes to accomplish.
Once fitted onto the FN 509, I took a trip to the range to sight the optic in. Lining up some shots, I discovered my elevation was slightly off. A quick click adjustment and I was soon on target. From there, it was all about sending a volley of rounds downrange. After a few hundred rounds or so, I checked to make sure the fitment on the FN 509 was solid. It hadn’t budged and wasn’t wobbly, a plus for the platform. Even better, it didn’t add a whole lot of weight to the FN’s body.
The 3.5 MOA dot is a decent size and fairly easy to see against a range of targets. Admittedly, I suffer from astigmatism which often makes red dot shooting difficult. It’s why the Glock 19, my primary carry gun, runs without an optic. Though I experienced that familiar starburst pattern with the Trijicon RM06 Type 2’s red dot, I was pleased that the RMR Type 2 allowed me to dim the red dot so it wasn’t as distracting. A few quick pushes on the brightness setting, to bring the red dot to just about as low as it could go, and I was seeing fewer starbursts than before. The RMR Type 2 also permitted co-witness of the iron sights, so when the starburst pattern got to be too much, I was able to continue shooting using traditional sights.
Final Thoughts
Though the Trijicon RM06 Type 2 is a solid red dot, and one that I highly recommend to pistol shooters for the features it offers, if you suffer from any degree of astigmatism you might want to sit this one out. Despite its rugged construction, waterproof design, and adjustable LED it just can’t overcome the shortcomings of astigmatism – not the optic’s fault but something to note, nonetheless. With an MSRP of $655, the Trijicon RM06 Type 2 is a great solution for normal eyes looking.
