We were thrilled when Pheasants Forever recently recognized Kansas as a “public habitat jackpot.” But it’s not news to us; we’ve known it for years.

Thanks to better nesting and brooding conditions, our pheasant and quail populations are expected to provide some of this season’s best hunting in the country.

• Lots of access: Kansas offers more than a million acres of walk-in access hunting. To help plan your hunts and strategize locations, we provide the 2014 Upland Bird Forecast and the Kansas Fall 2014 Walk-In Hunting Access Atlas.
• Mixed bag opportunities: Some of Kansas’ public hunting complexes include grass, milo, wooded draws and shelterbelts all in the same area. That’s why Kansas offers the best opportunity in the country for a mixed bag of pheasant and quail.
• Newly added areas: In 2014, Kansas added 68,896 acres of Walk-in Hunting Access through a new Hunting Access and Conservation Habitat initiative, which used long-term contracts on Conservation Reserve Program acres to acquire quality locations.
• Kansas offers more for hunters: Compared to some other popular hunting destinations, Kansas has longer seasons, cheaper hunting licenses, no sales tax on hunts (which is great for corporate groups) and bigger bag limits.
• Online license and permit purchases: Kansas’ pheasant and quail seasons run Nov. 8 – Jan. 31. You can buy your Kansas hunting licenses and permits online.

We love to get out in the field and see our working dogs pointing and flushing upland game. Once we see a little snow on the ground, we get even more excited because we know it’ll be great for scent-trailing, too.
