Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- As we celebrate the historic victory of Donald J. Trump to the White House, it is fitting that we remember America’s veterans.
Their sacrifices, after all, contributed to the blessings of liberty that allow even highly contested elections like the one America just experienced to resolve in a peaceful and orderly fashion.
Reform of the troubled Department of Veterans Affairs is a priority for the Trump campaign.
His 10-point plan includes personnel changes at the VA to refocus attention on the needs of veterans and steps to ensure care is provided in a timely manner. Trump’s plan for his first 100 days in office also includes promoting legislation to allow VA beneficiaries the option to seek their care in the private sector.
Meanwhile, NRA is focused on ensuring that no veteran has to choose between the VA benefits they earned through their service and their Second Amendment rights. That’s why we continue to support the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act, which would stop VA’s outrageous practice of labeling beneficiaries who need help with their finances as “mental defectives” and reporting them to the FBI’s gun ban database. The Act stipulates that such reporting could only occur if a “judicial authority” determined the individual to be “a danger to himself or herself or others.” With Trump in the White House and pro-gun majorities in Congress, the Act’s time may finally have come.
The NRA itself was originally founded by veterans to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.”
And while our mission has expanded to supporting pro-gun candidates for public office and protecting the civil rights that make America’s tradition of arms possible, we remain firmly committed to these roots.
The NRA salutes all the men and women who have served our nation in uniform. Their patriotism and their selflessness remind us that we are not just members of one or another political party but citizens of the greatest country on earth. May we honor their example by our own efforts toward unity and service to the greater good.
