New Berlin, Wis. –-(Ammoland.com)- This week on MeatEater, Steven Rinella embarks on another intense hunt in the late summer heat of New Mexico to spot and stalk antelope – or the American pronghorn.

He’s not alone on this journey; joining him in the 100-degree heat is a good friend who’s offered his private ranch in the Cimarron Basin. It’s prime rut time, but the antelope are also the second fastest land animal in North America – so will Rinella and his buddy get their chance in New Mexico’s wide open spaces? Tune in to MeatEater, exclusively on Sportsman Channel, this Sunday, October 20 at 9 pm ET/PT.

Rinella trades wintry, mountainous terrain for the hot, wide-open desert—making for a challenging spot and stalk hunt. Believing the hunters to be a possible herd of females, the bucks approach them from off in the distance. “We don’t want to spook him, because if we do, he will flare the hairs on his rump as a warning, which also releases a pheromone to other antelope in the area,” explained Rinella. “And this is going to sound weird, but they kind of smell like corn chips.”

Rinella said he isn’t used to antelope bucks acting this way in the wild.

“I always take pride in doing public land hunts, but I couldn’t pass up on the chance to hunt on private land where the antelope act like antelope,” said Rinella. “Without pressure from other hunters, they were approaching us and I just couldn’t believe it.”

Viewers will have to tune in to see if Rinella and his buddy get a chance at their antelope. And if they’re so lucky, they’ll try out an old family recipe for Red Chili Antelope Tacos handed down from generation to generation.
