A Prince Rupert’s Drop is made from molten glass in a way that gives it a lot of strength, but in the end, it’s all about the shockwave that proves their undoing.
SmarterEveryDay took a number of PRDs and, with a high-speed camera recording, proceeds to batter them with a .22LR rifle.
The glass, which has very high residual stress within the drop, actually smokes the bullets on impact but the shockwave comes back around and often takes out the drops themselves, a process which is beautifully shown in the 150,000 frame-per-second video.
