Video has been released of the U.S. Special Operations team that captured an al-Qaeda terrorist suspect during a pre-dawn mission in Libya in October 2013.
Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, who is wanted in connection with the 1998 bombings of American embassies in East Africa that left more than 200 people dead, had just finished morning prayers and was returning to his family’s home in Tripoli when he was ambushed by a U.S. special operations team at 6:38 a.m., Washington Post reports.
The operation was a joint effort of the CIA, FBI and Delta Force operatives. Moments after intercepting Ruqai, the team loaded him into a vehicle and sped away. The entire ordeal took just under two minutes, but ended a 13-year manhunt.
Ruqai was transported to the USS San Antonio and delivered to New York, where he plead not guilty to terrorism charges during his October hearing.
It was once believed Ruqai had ties to Osama bin Laden himself, but according to his attorney, Bernard Kleinman, he never swore an oath of allegiance and was not involved in the in 1998 bombings.
“My client is innocent of any and all actions that either directly or indirectly resulted in the bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in August 1998,” said Kleinman. “His trial will prove this beyond any doubt whatsoever.”
