Austin, TX -(AmmoLand.com)- The Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA), the state’s largest firearms and shooting sports organization, applauds this week’s passage of Proposition 6, which amends the Texas Constitution to guarantee the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife.
“Hunting and fishing are family traditions in Texas and it’s imperative that we preserve and pass on that legacy our children and grandchildren. The passage of Proposition 6 does that,” says TSRA Executive Director Doug DuBois, Jr. “By including our hunting and fishing traditions in the Texas Constitution, we ensure that wildlife management decisions continue to be based on science, not reckless propaganda professed by well-funded anti-hunting groups, and that Texas traditions can be enjoyed by future generations.”
With the adoption of Proposition 6, Texas becomes the 19th state to have approved a constitutional amendment which ensures the right to hunt and fish. Vermont was the first state to constitutionalize such a right in 1777. The other 17 states have all adopted right to hunt and fish amendments since 1996.
Founded in 1919, the Texas State Rifle Association is the largest firearms and shooting sports organization in Texas with nearly 40,000 members. TSRA is also the largest, award-winning state affiliate of the National Rifle Association and is sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. As a part of its public education efforts, the association produces a full-color bimonthly publication, TSRA Sportsman, which updates members on current news, hunter education programs, shooting sports competitions, and important issues effecting their Second Amendment rights. The TSRA also hosts an annual meeting every February that features exciting fund-raising auctions, informative speakers, exhibitors, and other events.
