The Texas Legislature has passed a bill that would allow volunteer firefighters and first responders with concealed carry licenses to carry guns into restricted areas.
After a 136-9 favorable vote in the House on Friday, the measure now heads to Gov. Greg Abbot’s desk for signature, the Associated Press reported.
Abbott is expected to sign it, but unless he unexpectedly vetoes, the bill will become law automatically even without his approval.
Supporters have said the measure will allow first responders to access their firearms more quickly, as they won’t have to store their guns and can instead have them on their person.
Opponents expressed concerns that first responders do not take extra training courses to carry their guns on duty and said the bill could have unintended consequences.
