Tennessee lawmakers shot down a bill Tuesday that would have reduced fines imposed on gun owners carrying without a permit in the state.
The proposal — Senate Bill 339, sponsored by Republican Sen. Frank Nicely — failed in the Senate Judiciary Committee when a first motion to hear the measure was not followed up by a second, the Associated Press reported.
Under current Tennessee law, gun owners caught carrying firearms without a permit can be fined up to $500 and could also face possible jail time.
The measure would have reduced the fine to $100 for a first offense and up to $250 for a second offense and would not have included jail time as punishment. The bill also specified that individuals would be cited and note arrested for first and second offenses.
Nicely said he would propose a similar bill next year.
