A Chicago teen woman who was shot in the head was saved by her hair weave, the teen’s uncle said Tuesday.
Chantal Hammontree, 18, was exiting her friend’s car when a gunman walked up and shot her in the head at point blank range. While Hammontree was critically injured, her uncle believes it was her hair weave that prevented a fatal wound, the local NBC-affiliate reports.
“[Doctors] assumed that when the bullet kind of went in, it bounced out because she had the weave in her hair,” said Hammontree’s uncle, Randy Berry. “And she got a few fragments in there, but she did lose consciousness, she still woke. She’s still coherent and knows everybody and everything.”
Berry said another one of Hammontree’s uncles was shot and paralyzed last May in a gang related shooting, and thinks his niece may have been shot because she was “affiliated” with him.
Hammontree was transported to University of Chicago Hospital to be treated for her wounds, where she was listed in critical condition.
Doctors did not confirm Hammontree’s hair weave slowed the bullet.
