A 17-year-old boy is charged with first-degree robbery after he was caught breaking into the Springfield Bass Pro Shop’s Fine Gun Room early last month. The teen took off with $45,000 worth of guns, but also caused more than $30,000 worth of damage to other guns as he made his escape after getting caught by an employee.

According to the complaint, the employee was putting away merchandise in the hunting department when he noticed shattered glass in the Fine Gun Room and the teen inside, his face partially covered with a bandanna. The employee said at that point the teen, who was later identified as Ray J. Genel, noticed the employee, pointed a gun at him and told him he would shoot him if he did not leave. The employee then hid until Genel was gone.

Police found that Genel had gained access into the Fine Gun Room through an outside window and broke three display cases. He made off with five guns, valued at $45,000, but dropped several others on his way out, causing an additional $30,000 worth of damage to the collectibles.

The following day, Genel’s aunt contacted authorities and said she had four of the guns at her home, and another family member took the guns to the police later that day.

Genel was arrested Friday following a brief foot pursuit. He was charged with first-degree robbery and being held on a $50,000 bond.
