All 17-year-old McKenzie Gill wanted for her 18th birthday was a cake showing her support for Donald Trump, but thanks to a bakery worker at a Bossier City, Louisiana, Albertson’s grocery store, Gill didn’t get her wish – at least not initially.
Gill went to the store Monday to order her cake, but was refused service. The teen immediately took to social media to express her frustration.
“Just left Albertsons. The woman behind the cake counter just refused to make me a birthday cake because I wanted Trump 2016 on it. Did that really just happen?” Gill wrote in a Facebook post, adding a “check-in” as not to place blame on the wrong bakery.
Gill described Trump as someone she really looks up to and noted her excitement about being able to vote in this year’s election. She hoped to share that excitement at her upcoming Trump-themed birthday party, but the bakery worker almost ruined that for her. Gill said she just wanted the bakery worker to do her job and leave her opinion out of the cake designs. The teen also took her cake order elsewhere.
However, when Albertson’s heard about the cake controversy, they were quick to set the record straight, blaming the refusal not on politics, but rather copyright laws.
“We apologize to our customer in Bossier City for the situation regarding the cake that was requested,” Connie Yeates, spokesperson for the grocery chain said in a statement. “Our Bakery staff member misunderstood the training provided regarding copyrighted phrases, and incorrectly informed the customer we could not fulfill her request. We would be happy to provide the cake as the customer requested.”
