18-year-old Daran Wankum had a dream to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and become a Marine. But then he started having double vision and received a life-changing diagnose: Cancer and a large tumor on his brain.
The diagnose broke his dream of ever becoming a Marine, or so he thought.
After finding out about Daran’s diagnose, the Marines from the local recruiting office where he had planned his career banded together and stood guard outside his hospital room for a full 24 hours before he underwent surgery.
Daran then went to Washington to attend a ceremony where he was made an honorary Marine, an honor that has only been given to 22 people in the history of the Marine Corps.
His only dream now is to beat the cancer.
