And it wasn’t a new gun, but Taurus’ introduction of the latest iteration in their Judge series of .45/.410 revolvers kicked up a lot of attention. OK, the Judges are all fun to shoot, but the idea of a three-inch barrel, reduced profile hammer (Model 4510PD) model called the “Public Defender” that could be carried in a purse was definitely buzz inspiring.
But the biggest impact wasn’t the gun itself, despite the fact there were crowds waiting to handle it in the Taurus booth throughout SHOT. It was the introductory commercial entitled “Melon Heads”. Taurus engaged viewers with a movie-quality scenario…attractive lady, dark parking garage, dark shadows lurking and the whispered “Let’s get her” setting off some very impressive – and sudden- action. Quick as a bunny, this decidedly not-defenseless lady whipped out a Public Defender and blasted five watermelons (the melon head gang) into oblivion faster than a Gallagher concert. It was a grabber commercial and an amazingly effective demonstration of raw firepower and controllability from a three-inch, five shot revolver.
A plasma screen looped the commercial and a “making of the melon heads” trailed video throughout the show. Everyone paused; many stopped. It was an effective demonstration of a firearm’s capability presented with a sense of whimsy that was both engaging and sobering.
