Monday, an armored vehicle – packed with explosives and driven by two suicide bombers – breeched the defenses of the Minakh air base in Beirut, Lebanon, affording Syrian rebel fighters the opportunity to launch their offensive attack.
The isolated government soldiers in northern Syria had defended Minakh against the rebels for nearly a year, but by early Tuesday their walls were overrun. Several tanks were seized as well as various munitions; the soldiers were taken prisoner.
The rebels may have scored a victory, but it’s likely to be short lived. A strong possibility exists that the government will strike back with an air assault within days. However, if the rebels manage to hold out, then it will challenge the government’s belief that they are strolling to victory.
