A 46-year-old man was fatally shot by officers in Kennewick, Washington, Sunday evening after he struck one of the officers in the head with a sword.
Two officers responded just before 7 p.m. to calls from concerned citizens about a man walking down the street with a sword. Witnesses said the suspect, Hussein Hassan, was attempting to conceal the weapon with a newspaper.
According to Officer Keith Noble, with the Kennewick Police Department, the officers arrived on the scene at the same time and when they attempted to make contact with Hassan, he rushed the officers and struck one in the head with his sword. Both officers then fired at Hassan.
Noble said the entire incident unfolded very quickly, within a matter of minutes.
Hassan and the injured officer were both transported to the hospital. The officer was treated and released, while Hassan succumbed to his injuries.
The incident is being investigated independently by the Tri-City Special Investigative Unit.
