A homeowner shot and killed a suspected burglar after finding him inside his home Friday morning in Dallas County, Alabama.
The homeowner and his wife, who wish to remain anonymous, entered their house around 2:30 a.m., interrupting two suspected burglars in progress, according to a local ABC affiliate.
While one suspect immediately ran away, the second put up a fight. He approached the male homeowner from behind and struck him in the head, knocking him down to the ground, Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman said. Little did the suspect know that the man was carrying a pistol. The homeowner then fired a single shot, striking the suspect on the right side of his abdomen.
“When officers got there we found one deceased individual in the kitchen,” Huffman said. “He has been identified as Antwon Smith who lives approximately about four or five city blocks from the victim.”
The sheriff’s office identified the deceased as Antwon Smith. They are still looking for the second suspect, but offered no description.
Wanda Smith, a nearby neighbor who runs a daycare out of her home, told reporters that it was “very disturbing to find out that someone had been shot.” She said that in order to reduce the growing crime problem in the area, neighbors need to look out for each other.
However, Wanda also placed some of the blame for the rise in crime on individuals for not reaching out when they need to.
“I think sometimes we don’t get some of the help that we can get because we don’t seem to be concerned about it ourselves,” she explained. “We don’t ask for it, we don’t go to the proper authorities to let them know that we are concerned.”
Although no charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner for shooting the suspect, Huffman said that the ultimate decision will be left to a grand jury.
