A Post Falls, Idaho police chief was shocked when he received an arrest warrant for a 9-year-old boy who is accused of stealing a pack of gum.
Due to the boy’s age, Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh couldn’t comment on the case, but did confirm that the warrant was issued because the boy failed to appear at court for the theft charges. However, Post Falls Chief of Police Scott Haug said the reason the boy didn’t show up for court wasn’t because he just didn’t feel like it, but because the family had no means of transportation.
“Had we known that before the court date we would have provided something for the family,” Haug said. “I wish we would have had more information that way we could have provided some sort of assistance.”
Haug said in his 30 years of service he’s never seen anything like this before, and was “surprised it had gotten to this level.”
The boy currently remains in the county juvenile detention center.
