Indiana -(AmmoLand.com)- In the world of shooting the term, “squib”, refers to a bullet that does not exit the barrel of a gun because the round had a low powder charge or no powder at all and was only detonated by the primer.
The term also defines a weak person. Both can be dangerous in particular the latter.
It appears that the default reaction to a tragic criminal shooting is always going to be the same; we need more gun control. But the brutality of someone plowing a car into a crowd or an arsonist setting fire to a building killing people inside the demand to curb car purchases or matches doesn’t become a national debate.
The focus on the problem, which should be, why anyone would choose to maim or kill another human being is lost in the stampede to pass the next magic potion gun law to add to the ton of duplicating laws already in existence.
The idea now being considered about using a list of names of people who fly commercial airlines is another example of giving citizens a false sense of a fix to the problem. Who comprises the list? What criteria gets a person on the list and how big of a nightmare is it to get a name removed when it was an error to be placed on the list?
I just got a phone call from Senator Dan Coats’ Chief of Staff, Viraj Mirani, while I’m writing this letter. I understand that there are many lists such as the TSA No Fly list, the OFAC Specially Designated National List, the State Department List and an FBI list.
Another list I’m concerned about is those who are on the list of people being treated for PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and I’m afraid that is a very large list that potentially could be used to prohibit a person from exercising their second amendment right. Mr.Mirani told me that idea has been floated around from time to time.
This past weekend there was an event held in Indianapolis for more state gun control laws. https://www.tribstar.com/news/indiana_news/state-of-the-statehouse-moms-want-mourning-turned-into-action/article_7870e528-8810-5147-9ec2-4c651a0c633d.html.
I was interviewed by the reporter prior to this event about my thoughts on the matter of violence society is plagued with. As you read the article keep in mind that these ladies are dedicated to their cause and they are the ones I have dealt with at the Statehouse over the past few years. In the article it refers to the bill I had this year which dealt with the Indiana handgun application question asking about DUI’s. Because of the Indiana statute’s broad definition of, “alcohol abuser “, some people fell under that category that should not have been, much like those who will find themselves on a “no fly list”.
But, in committee I could not get those ladies to understand the purpose and logic in the measure and coupled with the programming by the media in the way it was printed it was hopeless to overcome the lack of folks to process a thought.
Remember, too, that this next session five solid pro Second Amendment state senators will not be coming back for various reasons and coupled with those senators who have retired over the past couple years could pose challenges on gun issues.
Our next Patriots meeting will be Saturday June, 25th. Typically, some gun owners fade away in keeping an active role to stand up for their gun rights, mostly because they just get comfortable and take for granted someone else will look out for them, but the opposition does not slow down.
