So You Got a New Gun, Now What? :: Guns.com

If you were one of the lucky ones who got a new (or new to you) firearm in recent days, or just treated yourself, here’s what comes next. Below is some Gun 101 knowledge from the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

With that, safety is always first so be sure to brush up on your basic firearms safety rules to avoid extra and inconvenient holes in yourself or those around you. There are 10 commandments to gun safety and, while all are important, the first four are the big ones. Even if you already know or think you know, it never hurts to revisit these often.

After you brush up on your safety, read the gun’s manual. If your gun didn’t come with one, most current manufacturers (e.g. Colt, Glock, Smith & Wesson) list PDFs of them for free download on their websites.

Next, you probably want to get out to the range. With that, there are a few things to keep in mind to not be “that guy” when you get there.

When not at the range or the gun is no longer in use, be sure to store it safely. Remember, firearm safety depends on you!

And finally, for those who lucked into an old gun this season– and by old we mean like WWII or before– the below deep dive by C&Rsenal gives a lot of solid gold tips and tricks on what to do with it to keep it intact for the next generation of collectors.

In the end, have fun, be smart, and stay safe.
