Hospital staff upgraded Rep. Steve Scalise’s condition to fair last week following a deep tissue surgery.
The Medstar Washington Hospital Center released a statement Thursday saying the House Majority Whip will “require careful monitoring to see if and when further interventions are necessary.”
The Louisiana Republican congressman and four others were shot June 14 during an early morning baseball practice at a field in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.
The gunman died later the same day at a Washington-area hospital after a shootout with Capitol Hill law enforcement and the Alexandria Police Department.
Thursday’s announcement follows a string of setbacks for Scalise’s recovery. The congressman, who suffered a gunshot wound to the hip during the attack, underwent at least four prior surgeries to stop internal bleeding and repair damage to organs and shattered bones. Hospital staff readmitted him into intensive care July 5 for an infection.
The other four shooting victims — Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, Republican aide Zach Barth and Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika — have all been treated and released.
