In the past few days Russian forces have been very active in Syria, dropping bombs and firing cruise missiles– and we have the footage.
Allied with current Syrian strongman and part-time ophthalmologist Bashar al-Assad, the Russians have been tapped in to help the Syrian military fight back a number of ever-increasing threats to the regime, proving it’s always a good idea to be on Moscow’s buddy list if you are a marginalized dictator.
The whole thing is seen as great sport in Russia, and national news channels are even giving weather forecasts predicting excellent conditions over Syria for the Motherland’s bombers.
Of course, there is a confusing mash up of groups fighting Assad (Free Syrian Army, al-Nusra Front, Jund al-Aqsa, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, SMC, YPG, ODIN, the hamburger brigade, and so forth) with the U.S. and others are supporting some, Iran and her allies funding others, and some are just supporting themselves, so its kinda hard to judge whether the Putin brigade is putting the hard goodbye on radical or non-radical groups as they all look alike from 20,000 feet.
To point this out, above we have some footage released by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu of a Russian Air Force Su-24 dropping some good old fashioned dumb bombs on a suspected FSA position in Idlib, Syria on Monday; while below we have footage of 26 cruise missiles (most likely 3M-14 Klubs) fired from the Russian Navy Caspian Flotilla at suspected ISIL targets on Oct. 7.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Italy’s Minister of Defense held a presser in Rome yesterday during Carter’s five-day trip to Europe, stating they believe Russia’s strategy in Syria is wrong and the U.S. will not cooperate with their efforts until Russia ceases its pursuit of non-ISIL targets.
Looks like a smog alert may be in order for later in the month if this keeps up.
