Windsor, Colorado –-(Ammoland.com)- Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO) filed a lawsuit Monday against the Colorado Secretary of State and Colorado Ethics Watch for their unconstitutional demand for RMGO donor records.

“The current law essentially legalizes government ordered identity theft of citizens who want to take part in the political process,” says Dudley Brown, Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.

“We believe the law is unconstitutional and violates the public’s First Amendment right to free speech and participation in elections.”

RMGO’s lawsuit comes in response to a Colorado Ethics Watch complaint that was filed with the Colorado Secretary of State claiming RMGO violated Colorado laws, requiring anyone who spends more than $1,000 on a mailing to file reports with the Secretary of State, outlining who donated money for the mailing and how much the mailing cost.

“Courts have already decided that the $1,000 threshold for requiring reporting is too low,” says Brown. “Requiring reporting at such a low dollar amount is a violation of the First Amendment.”

“Colorado Ethics Watch is a leftist entity that uses the Colorado reporting laws to harass conservative and liberty-minded political groups and the hardworking people who choose to support them,” says Brown.

“We are confident the Courts will side with the Constitution and throw these invasive laws out.”
