Republican governor concedes North Carolina race (VIDEO)

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, the choice of gun rights advocacy groups, conceded Monday to Democratic candidate Roy Cooper after nearly a month of claiming voter fraud and asking for recounts.

“During this wonderful season, it’s also time to celebrate our democratic process and respect what I see to be the ultimate outcome of the closest North Carolina governors race in modern history,” McCrory said in a video statement released by his campaign Monday.

“I personally believe the majority of our citizens have spoken and we should now do everything we can to support the 75th governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper,” he said, but added allegations of voter fraud should be investigated.

McCrory assumed office in 2013 after serving as the mayor of Charlotte from 1995 to 2009. The loss marks the first time a sitting North Carolina governor has lost a re-election bid.

The National Rifle Association, which faired well overall in the November elections, threw its support behind McCrory and acknowledged a number of pro-gun and hunting measures he signed into law during his term.
