DeAndre Cortez Way, who performs under the name Soulja Boy, was charged in Los Angeles County on Monday with possession of a firearm in violation of his probation.
Chicago-born Way, 26, was arrested last December after police found two guns at his Studio City home– a Mini Draco and a Glock 21– the latter stolen from a Huntington Beach Police Department vehicle, as reported by the LA Times.
Previously arrested on drug and weapons charges in Georgia in 2011 and California in 2014, the entertainer was on probation at the time of his arrest.
Way, is probably best known for his song “Crank That” which was the first single to sell over three million digital copies. The song sparked a feud between Ice-T and Way that was ably chronicled in The Boondocks.
Way pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday.
Soulja Boy isn’t the only performer busted in California with an illegal gun in recent months.
Celebrity chef Artis Leon Ivey Jr., who performed as Coolio in the 1990s, was arrested last Septemberer and booked for possession of a firearm by a felon after TSA found a stolen gun in his baggage at LAX. Facing three years in prison, Ivey got three years probation and 45 days of community service after explaining the whole thing was “a misunderstanding.”
