The bodyguard of a rapper, who was performing at a Little Rock nightclub last month when gunshots rang out and left more than two dozen injured, was charged Friday with 10 counts of aggravated assault in relation to the shooting.
Authorities matched shell casings recovered from the scene to a gun found in a vehicle driven by Kentrell Gwynn, 25, through Alabama the day after the July 1 shooting at the Power Ultra Lounge. A total of three guns were found in the vehicle, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
The Little Rock Police Department confirmed Gwynn is being held at the Pulaski County Jail.
Although authorities have not given a specific motive, Gwynn is accused of opening fire in the crowded nightclub while rapper Ricky Hampton, who is also known as Finese2Tymes, was performing. Twenty-five people were shot, while another three were injured as they attempted to escape the gunfire. City officials agreed that it was nothing short of a miracle no one was killed.
Authorities have not said how many shots were fired inside the club or how many different calibers were found. The police department said the investigation remains active and asked for the public’s help identifying any additional suspects or providing any other information pertinent to the case.
Hampton is not facing any charges related to the Power Ultra Lounge shooting at this time. However, following a June 25 shooting outside of Club Envy in Forrest City, Arkansas, Hampton was slapped with charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in addition to aggravated assault and first-degree battery.
Likewise, when Gwynn’s warrants were served Friday afternoon, he was already in jail on federal gun charges stemming from the Power Ultra Lounge shooting, as well as the Club Envy shooting, to which he pleaded not guilty earlier this week. The Club Envy case is set to go to trial next month.
After the Power Ultra Lounge shooting, Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola expressed frustration at the increasing crime in the riverfront city. But Stodola also confirmed he planned to work with Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, as well as other lawmakers “to crack down on those who are on probation and parole who are illegally carrying weapons.”
