A shakedown at a Georgia prison earlier this month left the prison on lockdown after authorities turned up a slew of prohibited contraband, including nearly six dozen knives.
The Telfair State Prison was tossed by a total of 22 tactical teams, who uncovered 68 knives, 19 pieces of metal shaped into some sort of weapon, several cell phones and 33 gallons of alcohol. Prison officials said the contraband was found in inmates’ cells, laundry and a pipe chase.
Warden Phil Hall said the majority of the weapons are kept for protection – the same reason many opt to join a gang while behind bars – but nonetheless are still prohibited and grounds for disciplinary action. The shakedown came at the heels of mounting gang tensions, according to prison officials.
