Here are some carbon monoxide facts and key safety tips to remember while operating portable generators:
- Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide. You cannot smell, see or taste carbon monoxide, and it can be deadly.
- Keep generators outdoors. Only operate a generator outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not use portable generators inside tents or partially-enclosed spaces.
- Always place your portable generator downwind. Pointing the exhaust away from camp is critical to avoid carbon monoxide accumulating in occupied spaces.
- Be prepared. Always read and follow the operator’s manual before starting the generator.
Other factors to consider when selecting a portable generator for outdoor recreation experiences include noise level, fuel efficiency, run time and power output quality. Users should always adhere to safety precautions and remember to have available fuel on-hand for any necessary refueling.
