A co-pilot for Southwest Airlines was arrested Monday at an Albany airport after agents with the Transportation Security Administration discovered a loaded .380-caliber handgun in his carry-on bag.
Erick Gibson, 55, of New Orleans, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, which is a misdemeanor. He was released after posting a $200 bail.
Officials say the bag carried by Gibson, who has worked for the airline for nine years, was not screened before his flight out of New Orleans the night before. While getting ready to fly from Albany to Chicago, a TSA officer operating an X-ray machine noticed the gun. Airport security called in Albany County Sheriff’s deputies, who confiscated the weapon.
The incident caused a four-hour delay for the flight from Albany to Chicago.
