BOZEMAN, Mont. (Ammoland.Com) – One of the easiest places to walk in and grab an over-the-counter tag to hunt on public lands is Montana. And leading advocate for the self-guided hunter, Randy Newberg, Hunter, Leupold’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg, knows this area well. He invites Tim Lesser, Director of Product Development for Leupold, on a very chilly elk/deer combo tag hunt on Montana’s public lands.

“There is something about the simplicity of just putting on your pack, grabbing your rifle and going out on a public lands with a general tag,” said Newberg. “And I don’t know of more of a simple place for a non-resident to do just that than in Montana. With more than 30 million acres of public land, it is as simple as it gets.”
Lesser and Newberg battle frozen cameras, dead batteries, and frostbite, which makes them examine their sanity. They build fires to keep warm and then sit it out for the day watching and waiting. “This is steep, rough country and the weather is cold, so we glass. It is the most effective way to hunt in this terrain and weather,” commented Newberg.
After a few days of below zero temps – and a few close calls on bucks – the pair find a nice mule deer across the ridge. They had a treacherous stalk with the hopes that buck stays put. Once they reach the ridge, Lesser makes the shot and is treated with the nicest mule deer Newberg says he’s ever taken in all the seven years of producing outdoor TV.
