Federal agents arrested the wife of Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen on Monday morning on multiple charges stemming from an investigation into last summer’s massacre.
Noor Salman, 30, is being charged with obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting by providing material support to a terror organization, according to the New York Times. Federal investigators spent hours asking Salman questions in the wake of the June 12 attack, in which her husband pledged allegiance to ISIS and killed 49 people, injuring dozens more.
According to reports, Salman denied any knowledge of her husband’s plan, telling the Times last year she was “unaware of everything.” But in one interview, she told authorities that on the day of the attack, she told Mateen not to do it.
“Federal authorities have been working tirelessly on this case for more than seven months, and we are grateful that they have seen to it that some measure of justice will be served in this act of terror that has affected our community so deeply,” wrote Orlando Police Chief John Mina in a statement.
“I hope today’s news provides some comfort to the families who are mourning their loved ones,” said Florida Gov. Rick Scott.
Salman was arrested outside San Francisco, where she and her 4-year-old son have been living in recent months. In December, she filed paperwork in California to change her son’s name so that it doesn’t identify him as the killer’s son. The boy’s name is Zakariaya Omar Mateen.
His father, Omar Mateen, was shot and killed in a gunfight with officers in the early morning hours of June 12.
Salman is due in federal court on Tuesday in Oakland and she’s expected to go back to Florida to face the charges.
