When Riley and Emily Portie were killed by a drunk driver in Orange, Texas, on May 24, Officer Eric Ellison had the heartbreaking task of delivering the news to one of the couple’s five children.
Eighteen-year-old Kazzie Portie was home alone when he received the devastating news, and Ellison soon learned that the teen was due to graduate from high school in just a few days.
“I said, ‘You are going to walk!’” Ellison recalled.
“Your mom and dad will have front row seats looking down from heaven, and I’ll stand in their place. I’ve got your back,” he told the teen.
Ellison kept his word and – in full uniform – was there when Kazzie walked across the stage to collect his diploma. The entire stadium – with not a dry eye in the crowd – joined in a standing ovation as the two shared a hug at the edge of the stage.
