Washington DC – -(Ammoland.com)-  On August 4 2014, Sheriff Larry Rollins of Harnett County in North Carolina said he always carries a gun–even off-duty–to protect himself and his family, and he wants citizens of the county to adopt the same habit.

Rollins made these statements while speaking at a community meeting to address the surging crime in Harnett County in recent weeks.

According to FOX 8 WGHP, Rollins said, “The violence is fueled by gangs and drugs,” adding that citizens who dial 911 need to be able to protect themselves until police arrive.

He stated:

When I’m out with my family, even though I’m a cop, I don’t go anywhere without a gun. I mean it’s sad we have to have that attitude, but I am going to protect myself and my family. I want my deputies at your house as fast as they can when you got a problem, but you better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family.
