A 38-year-old man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself Friday in a New York City park, then fabricated a story to police about the incident.
Jermaine Hatchett was charged with reckless endangerment and weapons possession.
Hatchett was in Washington Square Park when he accidentally shot himself in the left leg just after 5 a.m. He then took the gun and tossed it into a sewer grate and told authorities that he was shot by heavyset man who walked up to him and opened fire.
The event spurred an investigation, which included shutting down the park and searching the area for evidence. Investigators also reviewed surveillance video which quickly proved Hatchett’s story was fictitious.
Hatchet was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The gun was also recovered from the sewer.
