A federal jury saw new surveillance video Monday showing the men accused of killing four people and injuring almost 300 others during bomb attacks at the finish line of the Boston Marathon almost two years ago.
One timeline video shows brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev moving through the crowd along the marathon route on Boylston Street April 15, 2013 just before and after the bombs were detonated.
Just before the first bomb explodes, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s shoulder can be seen dipping down, which indicated to prosecutors the moment at which the man sets the backpack of explosives on the ground.
An FBI agent narrated portions of the videos to jurors, the New York Times reported. In one video, Dzhokhar can then be seen making what authorities verified was a 19-second phone call to his brother.
Though the surveillance video includes no audio, the moment of the first explosion is reportedly evident as the crowd of people simultaneously look to the left. Moments later, another blast – this one visible to the camera. It appears to push the substantial crowd to the ground.
Another piece of video shows Dzhokhar walking into a Whole Foods grocery store just minutes after the explosions to buy a half-gallon of milk, the Associated Press reported.
The viewing took place on the second week of Dzhokhar’s trial. The defendant has pled not guilty to 30 counts, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death, according to court documents.
Two children were present at the blast site – one, an 8-year-old boy, was killed. A young girl was also severely injured.
