Individuals Support Coal and Natural Gas, Oppose Fracking Bans
WASHINGTON, D.C. –-(Ammoland.com)- Today, the Environmental Policy Alliance, a project of the nonprofit Center for Organizational Research and Education, released the results of a new poll on Americans’ attitudes toward energy and environmental issues.
The results find substantial public support for natural gas and coal development and opposition to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed coal emission regulations and to state and local bans on hydraulic fracturing.
Specifically, 69 percent of respondents believe that using America’s vast coal and natural gas resources is “important for national energy security,” compared to just 15 percent who disagree. Nearly half of all those surveyed oppose EPA’s proposed carbon emission regulations on new power plants, with only 31 percent supporting the rules.
“The results confirm what we have long known: EPA is radically out of touch with the American people,” said Anastasia Swearingen, senior research analyst for the Environmental Policy Alliance.
“Most Americans understand the value of coal and natural gas to the U.S. economy, and the disastrous effects of EPA’s proposed carbon emission regulations. EPA is supposed to keep our air and water clean, but rather than taking a balanced, commonsense approach to regulations, the political activists presently running EPA seem more concerned with bankrupting traditional energy sources.”
In addition, the poll found a plurality of respondents oppose state bans of hydraulic fracturing, a technique used to extract oil and natural gas; only 34 percent support hydraulic fracturing bans. States and localities across the country are currently considering legislation and ballot initiatives to ban fracking. The movement to ban fracking is being driven by radical environmentalist groups, including the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Food & Water Watch, which seek to end the use of coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy.
“These results should also serve as a warning for any politicians who are considering throwing their weight behind misguided state and local efforts to stymie hydraulic fracturing. The public supports responsible energy development, not radical environmental activism,” concluded Swearingen.
The poll, conducted by ORC International (the same polling firm used by CNN) from April 10-13 2014, surveyed 1,012 Americans. It has a margin of error of three percentage points.
